Bills’ thankful Hamlin speaks publicly for 1st time in video

ORCHARD PARK, NY (AP) — Damar Hamlin released a video Saturday saying he’s grateful for the support and vowing to pay it back after having to be resuscitated on the field in Cincinnati on Jan. 2.

Hamlin said now is “the right time” to speak after the Bills’ season is over and because he needs time to recover and gather his thoughts.

“It was just a lot to process within myself – mentally, physically, even spiritually. It was just a lot to process,” he said. “But I can’t tell you how grateful I am for all the love, all the support, and everything that just came my way.”

Hamlin then said he came to terms with what happened on the field as he collapsed after what appeared to be a routine tackle on Bengals’ Tee Higgins that hit Hamlin squarely in the chest.

“What happened to me on ‘Monday Night Football’ I think is a direct example of how God is using me as a vehicle to share my passion and love with the whole world straight from my heart,” he said in one 5 1/2 minute video posted to his Instagram account.

“And now I can help children and communities around the world who need it most. And that has always been my dream,” he added. “I’ve always stood for that and I will continue to stand for that. ”

The video, titled “Thank You: A Message from Damar Hamlin,” begins with Hamlin coming into view, removing a jacket, and taking a seat in a dimly lit room with the word “Bills” behind him. Hamlin shows no aftermath of the injury while wearing a white T-shirt with the name of his charitable foundation, Chasing Millions, on the front and a gold chain with the initials “DM” around his neck.

Hamlin also thanked his teammates, training staff and medical staff at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and Buffalo General Medical Center, where he was splitting his recovery. He also thanked those who have donated more than $9 million to his charity over the past four weeks.

“While I am so grateful to everyone, I know that just being thankful is not enough. This is just the beginning of the impact I wanted to have on the world,” Hamlin said at the end of the video, making a heart sign with his hands.

“I couldn’t do this without that support and love,” he continued. “And I can’t wait to continue taking you all on this journey.”
