The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings hockey team is in full swing.
After beating the Portage College Voyageurs 6-3 on Friday, they capped off a successful weekend with a 4-1 rematch against them.
King’s Ryland McNinch scored twice on Saturday, while Jacob Wozney and Dylan Esau each scored to lead Red Deer to victory at the weekend’s Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. Goalkeeper Arik Weersinkmade was solid between the whistles and made 20 saves to win.
Head coach Trevor Keeper said after the game his team had played well since the start of the second half. The Kings have won five of their last seven and moved up to first place in the ACAC men’s hockey standings with a 12-6 record.
“We won every Friday and dropped a few games on Saturdays,” Keeper said. “We talked last night that if you beat a team on Friday night, they come back and want you on Saturday. We made sure we had the intensity and focus we needed to complete the weekend series.
“We try not to put pressure on ourselves to worry about finishing first. We definitely want to finish with that… We’re just focusing on one game at a time, so we’re not worried about losing. We just want to keep these horse barns on and keep going and keep everyone behind us.”
On Friday, Nolan Doell scored a hat-trick and Jacob Kendall scored twice to lead the way for the Kings. Deegan Mofford also scored and goalkeeper Kristian Lyon made 14 saves in the win.
That same night, the Kings’ power play went four to four, but something changed for Red Deer on Saturday as they capitalized on just seven opportunities with one-man advantage.
“They put more pressure on us to line up on the blue line. We ended up talking about just putting the puck down behind their defender coming into the zone. Once we’re in the zone, we have a lot of puck moves and shots,” added Keeper.
With just six games left in the regular season, the Kings are hoping to continue their strong game in the second half and maintain the top spot overall. However, what Keeper believes makes this team special is its depth.
“Boys take turns taking the lead. [Friday] Last night Nolan Doell got three, but tonight Ninch got two. Our power play ended up scoring to give us a cushion so it’s not just the regular guys,” explained Keeper.
Red Deer switched nets between Weersink and Lyon this season and so far it has paid off for them. Weersink have played the most games with a 7-5 record with 2.96 goals against average and a .916 save percentage. Meanwhile, Lyon has appeared in just two games and with a 1-1 record, he has a 3.28 GAA average and a .928 save rate.
“Defensively everyone works and competes hard on the defensive side of the puck as well. It’s a solid team effort.”
