St. Peter girls basketball team tops Worthington, 74-53 – The Globe

WORTHINGTON — Injuries and fouls plagued the Worthington Trojans girls’ basketball team on Friday night in a Big South Conference contest against the stalwart St. Peter. The Saints defeated the Trojans 74-53.

The top scorer for the Saints was junior standout Rhyan Holmgren, who shattered Trojan defenses with layups, 3-pointers and free throws. She finished the game with 30 points. Holmgren scored 18 goals in the first half.

Madison Kamm scored 21 points for St. Peter and Annika Southworth scored 11 points.

“St. Peter has a really good team. They have a lot of weapons on offense and play really tough defense. It was a good test for us,” said Worthington coach Jessica Hogan. “St. Peter has many victories, they are at the top of our group. We want to try and achieve that. We knew it was going to be difficult to get in, but I thought we played the way we had to play in the first half. We focused on defense and did good things on offense. We just have to keep that consistency for a whole game.”

The Trojans narrowly played the Saints in the first half, trailing 39-31 at the break.

Senior Ellie Weg scored five early points before leaving the game through injury. The Trojans had three players out through injury, with starting eldest Karissa Bickett and Madison Beckmann, who came on as the Trojans’ first substitute. Beckmann scored 11 points and wiped three Treys.

“It’s part of the game. you hate to see it It’s a tough adjustment on the fly and the girls did their best. They’re hoping for the best for the injured players, but the game is on and you have to put the pieces together as best you can,” Hogan said.

The Trojans’ leading scorer was senior Tarren Spartz, who scored all 14 points in the first half. Spartz found herself in trouble early in the second game when she earned her fourth offense with 15 minutes left.

WHS junior Janessa Hamann scored all of her seven points in the second half.

The Trojans had won their previous two games against state-ranked Jordan and non-conference Albert Lea. The 4-12 Trojans face another tough conference opponent against the JCC Huskies next Tuesday in Jackson.
