The Columbus Blue Jackets placed left wing Gustave Nyquist on injured reserve and center Lane Pederson claimed waivers from the Vancouver Canucks, general manager and assistant governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.
Nyquist, 33, suffered an upper-body injury in his 700th NHL game of his career in Wednesday’s 3-2 overtime win in Edmonton and will be out indefinitely. He has 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points with 16 penalty minutes, two shorthanded goals and two game-winning goals while averaging 17:48 ice time in 48 games with the Blue Jackets this season.
The 5-11, 180-pound Halmstad, Sweden native has notched 174-249-423 with 186 penalty minutes, seven shorthanded goals and 25 game-winning goals in 700 career games with the Blue Jackets, San Jose Sharks and Detroit Red Wings since his NHL debut in 2011-12. Originally drafted by Detroit in the fourth round, 121st overall, of the 2008 NHL Draft, he signed as a free agent with Columbus on July 1, 2019.
The 25-year-old Pederson has accumulated 1-2-3 with 15 penalties, 15 shots and a plus/minus rating of +3 while averaging 12:50 ice time in 11 games with the Canucks in 2022-23 . He registered a shot at 10:58 TOI in Friday’s game against the Blue Jackets. The forward has gone 2-6-8, 27 PIM and 54 shots in 55 career games with the Canucks, San Jose Sharks and Arizona Coyotes since his 2020-21 NHL debut. He was originally signed by Arizona on October 13, 2016 to a three-year, entry-level contract.
Pederson, a Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native, added 17-7-24 and 22 PIM in 22 games between the Chicago Wolves and the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League in 2022-23. Since making his pro debut in 2017-18, he has averaged 84-82-166 and 130 PIM in 227 career games across six AHL seasons with the Canucks, Wolves, San Jose Barracuda and Tucson Roadrunners. The 6-0, 192-pound center averaged 53-87-140 and 104 PIM in 199 career games with the Swift Current Broncos, Red Deer Rebels and Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League from 2013-17.
