Homeland Security and INTERPOL get involved in Steinbach school threats

RCMP in Manitoba is receiving help from both Homeland Security and INTERPOL to try to locate the caller who threatened schools in Steinbach.

According to police, Clearspring Middle School was first threatened on January 18 when a caller indicated that a student was bringing a gun to the school the next day. Steinbach RCMP were advising and investigating this threat. The call was believed to have originated in the United States.

Since then, more threats have been made against Clearspring Middle School and Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS). Homeland Security was able to locate the phone number of a residence in Menasha, Wisconsin. The Menasha Police Department was contacted and followed up on this tip and has ruled out the homeowners associated with this number. Police say the caller used the wrong number when making the call over the Internet.

Manitoba RCMP Sergeant Paul Manaigre says the investigation is ongoing. They are currently focusing their attention on finding out where these calls are coming from.

“It’s a difficult process right now,” he admits. “We have experts on this and hopefully we’ll get some results soon and move on with the investigation.”

Manaigre says police conducted a search of the SRSS as part of their investigation Monday. The school was closed to students that day due to the cold weather and staff were advised to evacuate the building before the cleanup. Manaigre says one of the messages on the answering machine said there may be a bomb in the SRSS. RCMP searched this school Monday and found no bomb.

“Right now there is no evidence that anyone at the site is planning to plant devices or come to the school with a gun,” he says.

Manaigre says it’s reasonable to assume the call actually came from the United States. Until the exact location is confirmed, however, it cannot be ruled out that the threat actually came from the Steinbach area. He notes that whoever is making the call is likely following the news and is pleased with the attention these threats are receiving.

“They scare parents, students and teachers and ensure that a lot of resources are directed towards areas that shouldn’t be done right now,” he says.

In the meantime, his message to students, staff and parents is to carry on as if none of this is happening.

“We do our work in the background,” he assures. “If there’s a concern at any of those schools, the staff and the students won’t be let in.”

Therefore, he says if students and staff are allowed into the school, it means authorities have concluded it is safe to be there.
