Manitoba schools get 6.1% increase in operating funding for new school year – PembinaValleyOnline.com

School departments will take a closer look at the province’s funding announcement made this afternoon.

The Manitoba government is strengthening the province’s education system by increasing kindergarten through 12th grade funding by $100 million for the 2023-24 school year, a 6.1 percent increase in operating funds, the said Secretary of Education and Early Childhood Education Wayne Ewasko announced today.

“Our government believes that all students must be successful, regardless of where they live, background or circumstance, and this year’s investment will allow every single school department in the province to increase their resources,” Ewasko said. “Each department will see an increase in funding over the next year that will help them engage students and invest in the programs and services that best meet the needs of local communities.”

This year’s annual funding includes a $100 million increase, including:

  • $62.9 million increase in operational support, including an additional $20 million to address cost pressures, $5 million for special needs, and increases to other existing grants;

  • Increase in capital support payments by US$8 million;

  • $24M Property Tax Offset Grant Increase; and

  • additional $5 million grant for independent schools.

The Manitoba government is also investing an additional $106 million to make last year’s one-off funding for school departments permanent. This includes $22 million in support of student attendance and engagement to facilitate the implementation of Safe and Caring Schools, the new policy guideline, and an action plan to improve student attendance and engagement.

Continued funding of this funding will help school departments respond to financial pressures, strengthen student learning and support, and provide additional support for students with special learning needs. Including these increases in the annual allocation for schools will ensure that these funds remain available now and in the future, the minister said.

“This significant investment in kindergarten through 12th grade education keeps Manitoba one of the highest funding per student provinces in Canada,” said Ewasko. “This investment further underscores our ongoing commitment to improving literacy and numeracy and strengthening Indigenous education.”

The minister noted that work continues to develop a new education funding model, with face-to-face consultations planned with each school department after the budget.
