Winnipeg-based Cerebra to assist with provincial sleep test backlog

The contract with Manitoba will help clear the province’s post-pandemic sleep study case backlog.

Winnipeg-based healthcare startup Cerebra is working with the Manitoba government to provide the province with 1,000 at-home sleep diagnostic tests.

The partnership is part of Manitoba’s Request for Supply Arrangement (RFSA) process, which was deployed by the province in the summer of 2020 to begin cleaning up Covid-related backlogs. According to The Winnipeg Free Press, over 5,000 Manitobans are currently awaiting tests after demand has increased in the wake of the pandemic.

Founded in 2015, Cerebra said it will be “working closely with the provincial government” to clear the backlog, with kits shipping from “early 2023.”

“The pandemic has had an impact on sleep study waitlists similar to other areas of our healthcare system.”

Cerebra’s technologies enable polysomnography (PSG) to be performed in the comfort of your own home rather than in a sleep lab. PSG studies are comprehensive sleep disorder diagnostic tests that collect data from a patient to help diagnose the disorder, such as: B. Brain waves and heart rate.

Cerebra’s Odds Ratio Product (ORP) algorithm provides a more detailed picture of sleep and sleep architecture that is more sensitive than traditional tests. The kit comes with a set of sensors that monitor the user’s sleep tendencies to diagnose possible disorders.

“The pandemic has had an impact on sleep study waitlists similar to other areas of our healthcare system,” said Patrick Crampton, Cerebra’s president and chief operating officer.

“The ability to use locally developed technology to help Manitoba’s people is a great example of the innovation ecosystem that Manitoba is developing.”

The Manitoba government invested $110 million in 2022 to process surgical and diagnostic waitlists during their RFSA process. The province’s estimated health care backlog in the wake of the pandemic is estimated at over 100,000, according to Doctors Manitoba.

Several sectors of Manitoba’s healthcare system are using different strategies to keep up with the demands, such as: B. virtual consultations with specialists and advanced colorectal cancer screening.

Cerebra closed a $3.2 million private equity financing in the summer of 2017 with investments from angel investors and existing shareholders. In 2020, the Manitoba government invested $2.5 million in the company to provide 250 ventilators to Winnipeg hospitals.

The province did not disclose how much money was invested in the newly announced partnership.
