The Ongoing History of New Music, episode 968: 60 mind-blowing things about music in 60 minutes, 2022 edition

It’s that time again. Another year is almost over and once again we have been subjected to the vagaries of the universe and human stupidity and capriciousness. It got better with COVID but we still have the war in Ukraine. Politics is more polarized than ever, no matter where you go. Social media makes us dumber (and social media is dumber thanks to Elon Musk; when will he leave the planet?)

When it comes to the world of music we’ve lost Taylor Hawkins, Andy Fletcher from Depeche Mode, Paul Ryder from The Happy Mondays, Mark Lanegan, Dallas Good from The Sadies, Meal Loaf, Ronnie Hawkins, Coolio, Christine McVie, Olivia Newton . John and Ronnie Spector among others..

It’s still hard to make a living from streaming. Artists get burned out along the way. And inflation kills everyone.

That’s a lot to process. We hope that 2023 will be better. We must keep the faith, otherwise we will go insane.

This is also the time of year when I try to clean up the home office where I do all of my research, writing, and producing Ongoing History. I’m always looking for interesting to interesting and cool things to talk about when it comes to anything music related. When I have collected enough material on a certain topic, I can write a new episode.

But this technique also leads to a lot of orphan material, research that has gone unused because for whatever reason I couldn’t find a place for it. And it would be a serious shame if all that knowledge and that data and bits and bobs and facts were wasted. That’s why I pay a lot of attention to the annual cleaning at the end of the year.
