Chelsea girls and Spain Park boys remain in the top 10 for final rankings of the season – Shelby County Reporter

It’s hard to believe, but the end of the 2022-23 basketball season is fast approaching and only two Shelby County teams remain in the top 10.

Chelsea girls finish 9th ahead of the upcoming area tournament. The Hornets picked up two big wins over Oak Mountain and Pelham. Chelsea are now 21-7 overall and 3-2 in their area.

The Spain Park boys faced some adversity towards the end of the season, recently losing to Oak Mountain and to Hewitt Trussville 42-40. The Jaguars started the season in 3rd place and fell to 7th place. Spain Park now sits 20-5 overall and 4-2 in its region ahead of the Area tournament. Spain Park faces Oak Mountain and Hewitt-Trussville again in the Area tournament.

The Oak Mountain and Chelsea boys both received nominations in the 7A classification. The Eagles had a strong run in their area late in the season with a big win over No. 7 Spain Park, Hewitt-Trussville and Chelsea. The Eagles are 21-7 overall and 4-2 in their area.

It’s safe to say there will be a fight at 7A Area 6 between Oak Mountain, Spain Park, Chelsea and Hewitt-Trussville.

The Hornets are currently 15-12 with fresh area losses to No. 7 Spain Park, Hewitt-Trussville and Oak Mountain. However, Chelsea had a 69-49 victory over Pelham on Tuesday 31st January. The Hornets are 5-1 in their area and picked up a lone win over Oak Mountain in mid-January.

Thompson girls were nominated for 7A classification after a big area win over Tuscaloosa County. The Wildcats fell to the Warriors 49-48 on Tuesday, January 24. However, the Warriors then fell to Vestavia Hills in their last pre-tournament area matchup.

Thompson recently picked up wins against Isabella and Helena, adding a career win for head coach Martin Smith. The Warriors’ 53-39 win over Isabella marked Smith’s 350th win of his career.

The Briarwood boys, Helena and Pelham were all nominated for the 6A classification. Recently these teams went head-to-head with Pelham defeating Helena 42-41 and Helena defeating Briarwood 50-33. It’s going to be an interesting Area tournament for the 6A Area 8.

Montevallo boys slipped off the top 10 rankings after facing several challenging teams towards the end of the season. The Bulldogs earned a 4A classification nomination after beating Marbury on Tuesday, January 31.

The Westminster at Oak Mountains girls have earned their second nomination of the season after an impressive run. The Knights are 16-3 overall and 6-1 in their area with a lone loss to Cornerstone in mid-January. Westminster pulled away with several successful victories over Vincent and Holy Family Catholic.

The Alabama Sports Writers Association high school basketball rankings, the final of the season, began with teams reporting their scores to their local sportswriters, who nominated the teams for consideration.
