Old JC Phila. Sales Store Site to Be Used for Apartment Complex

A developer is preparing to build a 72-unit apartment building on the Johnson City lot formerly occupied by the popular discount supermarket chain Philadelphia Sales.

Westchester County’s Regan Development Corporation plans to build the mixed-use project at 333 Grand Avenue. The four-acre site borders railroad tracks and is east of Route 201.

The village had purchased the property from United Health Services in June 2020 for $200,000. It was intended to be used as the new site for the Johnson City Public Works Department, but that plan was dropped.

Now developer Larry Regan wants to build a four-story complex on the site. In addition to apartments, the building would include 6,200 square meters of retail space.

Mayor Martin Meaney said the project is making progress. He said some preliminary site work was being done. Funding has yet to be finalized.

Regan oversaw the $29 million redevelopment of two abandoned Endicott Johnson buildings a few years ago. More than 100 apartments were built in the old Century and Sunrise buildings.

The Grand Avenue lot on which the new project is to be built housed the legendary Philadelphia Sales Store from 1959. The retailer operated in this location for almost four decades.

Known as the “Phillies,” the location for his slogan “We buy out!” and for goods billed as “slightly irregular”. It was also famous for the special popcorn flavor that wafted through the store.

A sports complex used the old building for a few years before it was demolished.
