One thing is certain about the Newfoundland and Labrador U18 Major Hockey League: their teams and their players know how to score goals.
As the circle of five teams gears up for the end of the Christmas break, two of those teams have scored over 100 goals while another is just under the 100 goal mark.
First-seeded Pinnacle Growlers (18-7-1) have the highest total with 113 goals in 26 games, while third-seeded Central Impact (14-11-3) is off with 105 goals. Alongside the Impact is the tri-pen Osprey (11-14-1) with 99 goals.
Second-placed East Coast Blizzard (15-5-3) and bottom-placed Western Kings (6-19) each scored 88 goals.
Of course, if you want to score a lot of goals, you better be able to stop them as well. The Growlers were great at that too.
They have the best goals-against-goals in the league with 63, which gives them a plus-minus 50. Blizzard has the second-best total of goals-against-against with 79: The Impact (96 goals against), The Osprey (114), and The Kings (141).
The Kings’ Spencer Caines remains the league’s top points-scorer with 28 goals and 52 points in 25 games. Beside him a pair of ospreys.
Second is Nick Crosbie with 49 points (seven goals, 42 assists) in 26 games. They are followed by Alex Crane with 43 points (23 goals, 20 assists). Rounding out the rest of the top five are Impact’s Alex Kelloway (41 points) and Kings’ Liam Dutcher (40 points).
The Growlers, meanwhile, are led by Mark Corbett with his 33 points (18 goals, 15 assists). Leading the pack are Ryan Loveless (15 goals, 16 assists) and Liam Noble (nine goals, 22 assists), each with 31 points.
The Blizzard’s Joshua Hillier has the most wins among goalies. He’s 11-1 with a 3.20 goals against average and a .882 percent save.
The Impact’s Adam Hedges (10-5-1) and the Growlers’ Clay Ryan (10-3-1) are the next wins. Hedges also owns the second-best save percentage (.919) and goals-against average (2.40) in the league, while Ryan is third in goals against (2.44) and save percentage (.908).
Jack Barrington of the Growlers (8-4) is the league leader with both clean sheets (.925) and a save percentage (2.01).
Carter Arnold of the Blizzards (6-5-2) rounds out the top five with a goals-against-average of 3.31 and a save percentage of .896.
The Osprey are led in goal by Adam Currie (6-6-1) while the Kings’ best man is Ryan Roberts (3-11).
The league resumes play next week with 11 games starting on January 3. In it, the Growlers will be on their way to Harbor Grace to meet the Osprey.
This will be followed by a weekend of games at the Danny Cleary Community Center in Harbor Grace, which all teams will attend before heading to Nova Scotia for the East Coat IceJam tournament.
