Black History Month events across Waterloo region and Guelph

February marks Black History Month, an event celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians and their impact on our country’s history.
Below is a list of events taking place throughout the Waterloo and Guelph area.
WATERLOO REGION
The Elmira Branch Library is hosting an interactive and immersive museum tour to explain Josiah Henson’s story on February 2, 2023 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m
In Cambridge, the Kinbridge Community Association is hosting an Art from the Heart event on February 4th from 5:40pm to 7:30pm
Kitchener is hosting a community-centric interactive event on February 5 from 11:30 am to 5:00 pm at the Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum to celebrate the region’s rich Black history and culture. This event is hosted by the Caribbean Canadian Association of Waterloo Region.
February 13th is known as Black Love Day. Idea Exchange in Cambridge is hosting its first-ever Black Love Day celebration.
Elected officers will gather in the Rotunda of Kitchener City Hall on February 28 from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. for a Black Heritage Month Fireside Chat.
The University of Waterloo is hosting several events this month including a virtual conference and business talks.
Wilfrid Laurier University’s website states that they will celebrate the work of black staff and faculty members during Black History Month.
GUELPH
The University of Guelph is hosting several events on campus this month including a cooking class, panel discussion and fashion show. A full list of events can be found here.
The Guelph Black Heritage Society (GBHS) is celebrating its 3rd Annual Black Heritage Month.
Below you will find events that are carried out by or in cooperation with the GBHS:
February 1st – 11am at Heritage Hall
Raising Flags, Open House & Heritage Hall Tours
The African Nova Scotia flag is raised. There will also be a dedication, blessing and tours of the Heritage Hall.
February 4 – 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Wellington County Museum and Archives
Our stories. Our history. Our heritage. exhibition opening
The exhibition highlights the history of the Guelph Black Heritage Society.
February 9 – 6:30 p.m. in person and online
Sunya Table Read songs
Community members perform scenes from Adam Myrie’s Songs of Sunya. The evening includes a dramatic table reading from his forthcoming novel, autographed copies of the book and refreshments.
February 16 – 6:30 p.m
canvas and cocktails
An evening course that combines art and wellness and sets emotions in motion. Free admission. suggested donations.
24 Feb – 7pm Guelph Civic Museum
Fourth Friday at the Guelph Museum
With a musical performance by Shane Phillips. Free admission.
Lantern Ale at the Royal City Brewing Company
Stop by the Royal City Brewing Company for your Lantern Ale – a distinctive craft brew in honor of Black Heritage Month.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to GBHS.
