Overstory Media Group employees unionize amidst layoffs

Most of the editorial staff Overstory media group (OMG) co-signed union cards CWA Canadafollowing layoffs at the launch of digital news earlier in the week.

Thirty reporters, editors and community managers across 12 media companies are behind the union initiative, which will become known as Overstory Media Guild, According to what the CWA says, there was a months-long campaign to organize workers in Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary and Halifax.

Founded in 2021 by the CEO Farhan Mohammedco-founder of Daily hiveand executive chairman and tech entrepreneur Andrew Wilkinsonthe startup acquired old alt-weeklies The coast in Halifax and The Georgia Straight last year in Vancouver. They joined Victoria’s Capital Daily, Fraser Valley Current, Burnaby Beacon, Vancouver Tech Journal, Victoria Tech Journal, New West Anchor, The Westshore, Oak Bay Local, Tasting Victoriaand the Calgary citizen.

Earlier this week, OMG fired four editorial staff at Capital Daily — the company’s second round of layoffs in as many months — and fired the editor-in-chief Jimmy Thompson; journalist and editor Jolene Rudisuela; and reporters Brishti Brasu and Shannon Waters.

The Overstory Media Guild’s mission statement indicates that its goal is to help members and the company address a variety of issues that include skills development, work-life balance, diversity, turnover and burnout .

“We, the people of OMG, are proud of the hard work, ingenuity and passion that has gone into the success of this journalism start-up. To ensure continued success, we believe that forming a union is the best way forward – not just for ourselves, but for OMG as a whole.”

“The company itself was founded on the principles of ‘community-first’ reporting and ‘high-quality storytelling’. on World Press Freedom DayIn summary, Farhan Mohamed, CEO of Overstory, “We will never seek to maximize profitability over ethics or the right treatment of our employees and communities. [We will] do what is best for the community. Listen to what people need. Deliver the right information and create great experiences’”

“We believe that a union is an indispensable part of this equation and a critical component in building a workplace that listens, treats its employees and communities right, and helps OMG achieve its best potential,” the statement continued. “This will only become more important as OMG continues to grow and launch more brands nationwide.”

President of CWA Canada Martin O’Hanlon said in a statement that unionization will ultimately be good for employees, the company and journalism.

“A union and collective bargaining agreement will empower OMG workers, give them a real voice in the workplace, make them real partners and increase job satisfaction, morale and stability,” O’Hanlon said. “It’s good for everyone.”
