Maureen “Peggy” Shepherd passed away unexpectedly on December 26, 2022 at Michael Garron Hospital at the age of 85.
Peggy was born on April 9, 1937 to Delbert and Sylvia Greenidge (née Beckles) in Barbados, WI. She was the last of four siblings. She attended St. Matthias Girls’ Primary School and then attended Modern High School on a scholarship. She was a teacher at Unique High School for a number of years before moving to Toronto, Canada in 1962. She worked in the office of Steadman’s V&S Store for a short time. In 1965 she began her career in the state government. She started at OHIP in group accounting as a clerk and in 1981 transferred to Mimico Correctional Facility where she worked in Human Resources. After more than 35 years in the state government, she retired.
Peggy was a kind and generous person who made her home available to countless family and friends in need of temporary housing. With Peggy, it didn’t matter which side of the family you came from, she had the same love for everyone. She had unconditional love for her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. She was happiest when she knew the people around her were happy and content. She was a faithful servant of God and always reminded her family and friends that He was in control. All we had to do was put our trust and faith in him.
Peggy loved to cook, sew and garden. There was always food available if you stopped by to visit. In fact, you were expected to share a meal with her. She was a very talented seamstress and sewed many outfits for herself and her children. She was always willing to pass on her talents to those willing to learn. She loved watching the Toronto Blue Jays and Raptors in action. She wasn’t one to watch movies or sitcoms. Playing shoes were her favorites, especially Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
She was an active member of the Modern High School of Barbados Old Scholars’ Association (Toronto) Inc. She played significant roles in the Modernite Association (Toronto); as Treasurer and member of the Membership and Awards Committee.
Peggy was predeceased by her parents, Delbert and Sylvia Greenidge (née Beckles), and sister, Gloria Dottin. She is survived by sisters Elaine “Patsy” Daniel and Joan Tull, former spouse Norbert Shepherd, daughters Karyn Bridge and Tanya Shepherd, son-in-law Paul Bridge, grandchildren Britnee Ramdas, Isaiah Bridge Tajae and Jelyssa Gustavus, and great-grandson Caden Reid. And a lot of nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.
Although she never revealed her favorite color, she seemed to be drawn to the colors purple and lilac. Feel free to wear some purple to honor her memory.
Peggy’s homecoming ceremony will be held at the Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Ave. East, Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.
Viewing: January 12, 2023, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m
