National Volunteer Week began in 1974 to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers. Since then, the original emphasis on celebration has expanded; The week has become a nationwide effort to encourage people to volunteer in their communities. This year’s celebration takes place from April 16-23, 2023 and celebrates the powerful connection between volunteerism.

Over the past two years, volunteers have been vital in ensuring our most vulnerable have access to food, medical care and basic necessities. Volunteers from all sectors have stepped up during the pandemic to allow others to isolate as desired. In our area, we’re seeing a significant increase in individuals signing up to support their community, college students who need to fill hours, and people in second careers who need volunteering experience. This year we will repeat our volunteer celebrations. Mark April 7th on your calendar and nominate a volunteer in the following categories.
Letters of nomination and applications for The Ruth Burrows Volunteer of the Year and Volunteer Business Person of the Year and Maurice Rollins Youth Leadership Award will be accepted at the office until April 7, 2023.

Individuals may be nominated by an individual or by the agencies where the individuals volunteer. A committee reviews all nominations and makes the final selection. Everyone receives a trophy to commemorate their performance. In addition, the winner of the youth award receives a school scholarship. Nomination forms can be downloaded from www.viq.ca. We will keep you updated as we move through the next phase of reopening, safety and compliance with public health guidelines will guide us in our celebration.

Quinte Validity & Social Support QVSS is a nonprofit organization that serves adults with developmental disabilities through day programs. They are looking for energetic, community-oriented individuals with a wide range of skills to join their board as they begin a new phase at the agency. Applications will be accepted for review. Interested applicants will be invited for an interview at a board meeting.

Community Care Prince Edward County is seeking volunteers for the Picton Office Reception and Wellington Podiatry Clinic. Computer experience is required, training and guidance and support will be provided. They also need thrift store volunteers for their shop in Picton. This is a very social volunteer position that appeals to both men and women. Online orientation will be offered and mentoring with a long-time in-store volunteer will be offered. The time commitment is three hours per week.
Abigail’s is looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to volunteer on the Babies and Beyond program once a week on Thursday afternoons. Responsibilities include: Participating in all grooming routines, tending to childcare equipment, setting up and tearing down the activity area, returning items to their storage locations, maintaining an organized activity area, assisting with scheduled activities.

Catharine’s Kitchen in Quinte West is looking for volunteers to help with food prep, serving and cleanup. Shifts are from 8:45am to 1:30pm. There are also on-call positions as well as scheduled positions, they adapt to your schedule. Catherine’s Kitchen is open Monday through Thursday.
The Alzheimer Society is launching an in-home activation program. Volunteers are required to work with the Activation Coordinator across HPE and Brighton Municipality to conduct activities at home and engage people with dementia directly. Volunteers are trained in dementia care and various activation activities for clients. Volunteers must be able to commit to only one visit (1.5 hours) per week to a client for a period of 12 weeks.

Links to Learning is currently looking for volunteers to assist with their one to one reading program. This program runs on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. High school volunteer seekers are welcome.
Habitat For Humanity ReStore is looking for volunteers to help with preparing merchandise for sale (cleaning and simple repairs), creating floor displays, customer service, housekeeping, loading and unloading donations, and preparing some items for recycling or help with scrap disposal.
The Stirling Mill Lending Library are currently seeking a person to fill the position of Board Secretary. Responsibilities include attending board meetings. Taking and writing minutes of meetings of the Board of Directors and committees, keeping and maintaining company minute books, documents, registers and seals, corresponding on behalf of the Board of Directors, keeping company records, announcing meetings. Grace Inn is currently looking for volunteers to help with kitchen duties including preparing workstation, creating meal plan, cooking and baking all items, cleaning workspace, cleaning and sanitizing kitchen. Training and orientation by employees.
The Regent Theater in Picton is looking for people to help out in the theater with odd jobs. This includes ticket sales, ushering, scanning and directions for attendees and concession stands. If you are interested in getting involved but are not quite sure what you would like to do, you can apply here! High school graduates are welcome.
