GENEROUS students across Warwickshire have helped keep food bank shelves stocked over the festive season.
Staff and students from across the WCG collegiate group collected food at four colleges.
The College Food Bank has set up collection and donation points in the libraries of Moreton Morrell College, Leamington College, Rugby College and Pershore College.
This year marks the fourth consecutive year of giving, with WCG’s fundraising campaign beginning in December 2019 and continuing through the COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021.
Items donated included tinned meat, lentils, biscuits, pasta, tea and coffee, with donations then being passed on to the Trussell Trust’s local college food banks in Warwickshire and Worcestershire.
The Trussell Trust is coordinating a service with local partners to ensure residents have food on their tables.
Steph Nettleton, Librarian at WCG, said: “We are delighted to support the wonderful work of our local food banks and to do our part to keep people’s access to food and supplies going through the winter months.
“The success of the campaign would not have been possible without our library users and we have seen a multitude of staff and students give generously to a good cause.”
At Leamington College, a cohort of A-level sociology students also got involved by conducting a fundraiser for Warwick District Food Banks.
The project was part of the learners’ Personal Development Unit to become active citizens, with the students founding the Foodbank project to become more community oriented.
The group collected bags of a range of canned and nonperishable goods, including milk, spaghetti, fruit juices and potatoes.
In addition to food, the students also collected household items that are in high demand, such as hygiene items, detergent and toilet paper.
And to keep the festive spirit going, people donated Christmas chocolate, puddings, and cookies.
