A Brief History of Point Perry

Let’s go back a little in history.
Port Perry was first surveyed and discovered in 1809 by Major Samuel Street Wilmot. Then in 1821 a certain Reuben Crandell and his wife established a homestead in the area.
Then another settler, Peter Perry, came to town and built buildings and homes on the shores of Lake Scugog, which eventually became known as Port Perry. In 1871 it was then recognized as a village.

Here are some of the best ways to enjoy your visit to Port Perry.
1) Spend a day enjoying Lake Scugog

For starters, you can just wander around and spend some time strolling along Lake Scugog.
Lake Scugog is not a natural lake, but a man-made one. Originally there were two lakes connected by a swampy area. However, due to the flooding of the two lakes as a result of a dam built in 1834, it became one and is now known as Lake Scugog.
Spending time at the lake is very relaxing. It’s the perfect place to take a deep breath, switch off and unwind.
2) Roam downtown Port Perry

Although the city is not big, it still has so much to offer. There are interesting structures and facilities to visit while strolling through downtown Port Perry. From visiting parks to hanging out at wineries, there are many attractions. We have compiled a list for you here.
3) Spend a day on the water

Port Perry residents are doing their best to preserve this old mill as it is now Canada’s oldest granary. The Currie Port Perry Grain Elevator as they call it holds so much history of trade and business in Port Perry from the 1800’s to the 1900’s.
It also has a very interesting history associated with the construction of the Port Perry railway station. At the time of this writing, it is currently around 125 years old.
6) Visit the Scugog Shores Museum Village

Well, if the Old Mill isn’t historically interesting enough for you, come to this part of town and you’ll be transported back in time.
This village is perfectly preserved, they made a museum out of the whole village. Visiting this village takes you back to the 19th century with all the houses, smithies, schools, churches and other village structures well preserved.
It’s amazing how they manage to preserve the museum village. There are also guides who will guide you through the history of the different areas of the village during your walk.
7) Stroll through Palmer Park

Palmer Park is not just an ordinary park. It is a good place for fishing, boating and promenade.
A walk through the park is relaxing while enjoying the view of the lake and the beautiful nature around Port Perry. You can also take the Waterfront Trail, which runs from Palmer Park to City Hall for more amenities and restaurants.
8) Watch a show at the Town Hall Theatre
