Obituary for Laurent Antoine Thomas Mougeot
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Laurent Mougeot on December 20, 2022 at the age of 67. He was at home surrounded by family and love. Laurent was predeceased by his father Lionel, his mother Gisèle (née Mousseau) and a brother who died in infancy. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Michelle (née Demmer); children Anne-Marie (Ryan), André (Sara) and Chantal (Rhys); grandsons Sage, Cedar and newborn baby Leo; sisters Colette and Charlotte; brothers Luc, Rémi and Charles; Sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and extended family. He especially loved being a grandpa, wearing his special grandpa sweater and enjoying visiting his little grandchildren. He was a caring husband and father. Laurent was so proud to see his children grow up and start their own career paths and families.
Laurent brought genuine kindness, curiosity and connection to every aspect of his life. Everywhere he went he found friends. He loved traveling and getting to know new places, cultures and food. He spoke several languages and never missed an opportunity to learn a new one. Laurent will be remembered for his charming, fun-loving sense of humor and generosity. Involving everyone and making them feel welcome was very important to him. For him, nothing beats the simple pleasure of helping someone in need or enjoying a special meal with family and friends.
Laurent was born in 1955 in Hull, Quebec. He made his way to the prairies in 1976 and moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for a summer job to learn English. Though it was only meant to be a passing visit, he fell in love with the charm and beauty of the prairies and northern Saskatchewan. He met his future wife, Michelle, at the University of Saskatchewan. For many years they lived in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, where their three children were born and raised. Michelle and Laurent celebrated 44 years of marriage this year. They created a welcoming home and shared a passion for cooking and travel. Laurent was an active member of the Fransaskois community and participated in many francophone initiatives throughout the province.
Laurent’s career has encompassed many aspects of local government and governance. He served in various capacities with the City of Prince Albert and later relocated to Regina, Saskatchewan to become Chief Executive Officer of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA). His commitment to promoting and strengthening local government and community organizations is widely recognized by his peers and he has received several awards for his work. One of the highlights of his career was founding SUMAssure Insurance Reciprocal, an insurance organization owned by Saskatchewan’s urban communities. Laurent has also held several appointments with local, provincial, national, and international committees and organizations. After retiring in 2017, he continued his professional endeavors by founding Melius Governance to provide consulting services. His career has taken him around the world, bringing his expertise to international projects in the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, Central and South America and the Middle East. Laurent was a leader, a mentor and a friend to many.
In 2011, Laurent fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning a 1972 Citroën DS 21, a car model that he admired for its ingenious and innovative design. He took great pride in restoring and preserving it for many years. On warm summer days, he loved to take long, leisurely rides around town.
Laurent was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in March 2020. He went through several different treatments and faced every challenge with optimism and strength. He and his family are grateful for the medical advice and care provided by his oncologists, Drs. Zarkovic and Dr. Forever grateful to Bosch and the caring staff at the Allan Blair Cancer Center in Regina and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency in Saskatoon.
An opportunity for family, friends and colleagues to remember and celebrate Laurent’s life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his memory to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan (cancerfoundationsask.ca/donate).
