Longtime Parkland Ambulance communication director announces retirement

Photo by Parkland Ambulance Longtime Parkland Ambulance employee Brian Reichle announced his upcoming retirement on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Parkland Ambulance Care announced the imminent resignation of Brian Reichle, their current director of communications

His last day in organizing is this Friday 3rd February.

Reichle began a 38-year career with Parkland Ambulance in February 1984, well before any Parkland employees were even born. He said there were a number of factors that influenced his decision to retire.

“I don’t think there is anything,” he said. “It’s easy, you wake up one morning and you start thinking about it and you start to see where you are in life and what’s going on. You just make that decision and stick with that decision.

“A couple of people called me and said, ‘What made you make that decision?’ I said, “Well, you just start thinking about it and thinking about where you are in life and what’s going on, and then you make the decision.”

Reichle has had a dedicated professional career that has taken him through many facets of the organization. The now 58-year-old started just out of high school at the age of 20 and has been integral to the growth of the Parkland organization.

“It’s been a fantastic career for me,” he said. “It’s been a whirlwind, and for someone thinking about getting into EMS, it’s not one of those rewarding careers you see on TV every day, but in the real world it’s a rewarding career. You work with a lot of great people.”

Professionally, Reichle held the rank of paramedic and, as communications director, was a valued member of the management team. He is one of five directors in the organization and the Emergency Communications or Dispatch Center is his area of responsibility.

“The dispatch center is very similar to the paramedics on the street,” he said. “There have been many changes in technology, changes in call volume, increases in staff. Change is a pretty common word when talking about EMS in general in Canada.”

Over the course of his career, Reichle experienced some incredible professional changes. The biggest has been the ability and level of care paramedics can provide to the people they care for, but there have also been changes to the equipment and vehicles used by paramedics.

In his 30 years everything has changed, from the vehicles to the technology to the training.

“People, you’re not only seeing a difference in the staff that you’re hiring these days, but you’re also seeing the shift in society, the violence and the drug users out there,” he said.

“I think back when I was just starting out there were similar calls where you went to public assaults and fights and other things like that, but everything has changed so much – the way people think and the way they think treat other people these days,” Reichle added.

Reichle has held many roles and responsibilities throughout his career. He is currently in charge of rural first responders. He is also the head of emergency planning and head of the Coordinating Center for Medical Communications North.

“It will be a two-stage retirement for me,” he explained. “Feb. 2 is my last day in my current position. Additionally, I’ll be continuing to work on Parkland, just on a couple of projects that aren’t finished yet, so I’ll probably be doing that well into the spring.

“I’m not just going to turn around and walk away.”

The communications center is one of the areas where he has seen the most incredible growth.

The technology guides the communications specialists in dealing with over 900 incidents per week. In a press release, Parkland Ambulance touted Reichle’s voice as a powerful voice in medical communications.

Reichle said he will miss the relationships he built over his 30 years with Parkland.

“I think what I’m probably going to miss the most is the people and the friendships you’ve made over the years, whether they’re just people at Parkland Ambulance or people in the industry you work with” , he said. “It will definitely be the people.”

Parkland stated in the press release announcing his resignation that “the incredibly stressful but vital work that our communications team accomplishes is only accomplished through genuine, honest and strong leadership” from Reichle

“We are sad that Brian is leaving, we wish Brian and his wife Laurie all the best in their retirement,” the press release said. “Congratulations to Brian on an incredible 38 year career at Parkland Ambulance Care.”
