Mistawasis council wants Harvard to address racism

SASKATOON – Mistawasis Nêhiyawak boss Daryl Watson has urged Harvard University to respond to the racist comments Sydney Daniels allegedly received from women’s ice hockey coach Katey Stone.

Daniels, a Mistawasis member, played for Stone and captained the Crimson from 2016 to 2017, then was an assistant coach for four years from 2018 to 2022. She is now an NHL scout for the Winnipeg Jets.

She is suing Harvard over alleged racial discrimination and Stone’s racist comments toward several players, including Daniels, who are of Indigenous descent in the 2021-22 season.

Watson said in a statement that they fully support Daniels’ lawsuit against Harvard as the First Nation community stands in solidarity with all Indigenous students who have experienced racism and discrimination in the educational institution.

“Racism has no place in any educational institution and it is unacceptable for indigenous students to be mistreated. Mistawasis is committed to treating Indigenous students fairly and promoting equal opportunity for all,” said Watson.

“We are proud of Daniels’ accomplishments during her five years at Harvard. Because of her talent, work ethic and resilience, she has broken down many barriers for First Nation athletes. We are disappointed in the Harvard Athletic Organization and the mistreatment it has endured.”

The Harvard University administration has not yet released an official statement on the matter or any information about the lawsuit and the actions it would take against Stone.

First Nation leaders say they hope Harvard has a responsibility to address and correct any discrimination against minorities on its campus. Racism should have no place anywhere, least of all in sport, they say.

“No scenario justifies a member of our community being treated this way. Mistawasis actively engages in discussions with our First Nations partners to create an inclusive environment and to make strides toward a relationship based on principles of honesty, integrity and trust,” said Watson.

“As a community, we oppose any racism or abuse of Indigenous students and advocate for fair treatment and equal opportunities.”
